Department of HIV and Prevention Services
The HIV Prevention Services Department provides several interventions aimed at helping prevent the continued spread of HIV, Hepatitis C and other infections diseases in East Harlem.
HIV Counseling and Testing is offered on our Mobile Testing Unit regularly outside of several community based organizations, at health fairs, and on several busy blocks, and at our Prevention Department offices at 2070 First Avenue.
Safety Counts is a program for substance abusers who may not be quite ready to enter into detox or treatment programs, but want to keep themselves safe from becoming infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. Participants meet in individual and group sessions to develop and work towards their own personal risk reduction goals.
Enhanced Outreach staff serve individuals in the community who are at high risk of HIV infection, including at shelters, soup kitchens, SROs and other community locations, to encourage HIV testing. Group education is also available on basic HIV Prevention, STD prevention, and similar topics.
All the programs offer referrals for STD testing, primary care, shelter, substance abuse programs, mental health services, food pantries and soup kitchens, job readiness programs, domestic violence and rape crisis services, etc.
